Capitalism Needs Help: A Call for Heart-Centered Leadership

So this might be tough to read, but is essential for us to address head-on. It’s the reality of capitalism in its current state and how it’s affecting not just humanity, but the very core of our existence.

There’s a persistent myth about human beings. It’s the idea that we always prioritize survival. But look around—what do you see? Climate change, persistent poverty, income inequality, and environmental destruction. Humans, unlike other species, often choose convenience, profit, and overconsumption even when it threatens our long-term survival.

Why? Because we’re trapped in a system that prioritizes growth over compassion, profit over purpose, and individual gain over collective well-being. This isn’t just our problem—it’s our curse. And it’s time we rewrite the narrative.

Let’s take a look at some ideas for a new way forward, and concrete steps business leaders and consumers alike can take to create a more just, compassionate, and sustainable world.

The Costs of Capitalism as it Stands

Now, I’m not here to vilify capitalism entirely. It has brought us innovation, medical breakthroughs, and opportunities for economic growth. But we cannot ignore its darker side.

Here are a few ways capitalism is failing us today:

  • Persistent poverty remains a global crisis.

  • Income inequality has reached staggering levels—1% of the world holds almost half its wealth.

  • Billions of workers toil away without a living wage.

  • Automation threatens millions of jobs, leaving people unsure of their future.

  • Unchecked businesses pillage natural resources and exploit the environment without consequence.

  • Most troublingly, capitalism often prioritizes competition and individualism at the expense of community and kindness.

We see it every day—workers burned out by unrealistic expectations, consumers buried by debt, and a planet gasping for relief from relentless exploitation.

Here’s the thing… it doesn’t have to be this way.

My Personal Journey Through Capitalism’s Curse

I know firsthand the allure and the peril of capitalism. Early in my career, I thought success was titles, profits, and possessions. And for a while, I achieved those things—on paper, I looked like the definition of success.

But inside? Inside, I was crumbling. My leadership was driven by efficiency, not empathy. It wasn’t until I stepped down as CEO of SeaQuest Aquariums and left the faith I’d been part of for nearly 50 years that I began to understand what I’d lost. I needed to rediscover authenticity, connection, and purpose.

I made mistakes—plenty of them. I used to think leadership was about commanding respect, driving profits, and staying ahead of the competition. I’ve learned the hard way that true leadership is about the opposite. It’s about humility, building trust, and helping others thrive.

Here’s the truth I share from my heart to yours: real success isn’t about wealth. It’s about the lives you touch, the safety you create, and the growth you foster in others.

Building A Better Way Forward

The way forward isn’t about dismantling everything capitalism has built—it’s about rebuilding it with a new foundation. One rooted in compassion, equity, and community. Here are some steps we can take to address the curse of capitalism together—for all of us, as business leaders, consumers, or activists.

1. Advocate for New Laws

We need stronger regulations to rein in exploitation and ensure fairness:

  • Prevent monopolies and price-fixing.

  • Guarantee a living wage for all workers.

  • Enforce anti-corruption measures.

  • Protect the environment through sustainability laws.

2. Redefine Success in Business

Success isn’t just about hitting profit margins. It’s about creating a lasting positive impact on the world. Leaders who lead with their hearts—who listen, who connect, who empathize—are the ones who will truly change the game.

3. Rebuild Community

Capitalism thrives in silos. Break them down. Whether you’re a CEO or a consumer, prioritize relationships, equity, and mutual aid over competition.

The Emotional but Brutal Truth About Capitalism

At its core, capitalism enshrines greed and feeds the ego. But I believe, with everything in me, that there’s a stronger force than greed or envy—it’s love. Love is the ultimate competitive advantage.

Imagine a world where CEOs prioritized the well-being of their people over the pocketbooks of their shareholders. Where global corporations worked to protect the planet rather than exploit it. Where ordinary people, like you and me, saw every purchase as a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.

This isn’t some idealistic dream—it’s a call for heart-centered leadership and community-driven action.

So, to my fellow leaders, consumers, and citizens of this planet, I leave you with this. The curse of capitalism isn’t inevitable. We are more than the systems we’ve created. We have the power to reshape them.

Start small—connect with your heart before your wallet. Use your voice and your influence to demand fairness, equity, and sustainability. And for my fellow business leaders, dare to lead with love and courage as I’ve learned to do—because the impact you’ll have will outlive profits and last for generations.

Together, we can create a new reality. A reality where love and empathy wins.

And always remember – lead from the heart.
